Can six Little Secrets make a difference?

What makes for powerful reading instruction? Expert teachers of reading know why and how to plan for reading instruction that gets powerful outcomes for students.

They know what the Six Secrets are and very importantly, how to make them work in a classroom. So what are they? They are:

  • Explicit, data driven instruction
  • Differentiated, strategic problem solving with the right amount of support
  • Lots of practice using intrinsically motivating reading material
  • Reading to someone else
  • Learning and making generalizations about how words work
  • Knowing exactly where to go next.

True it is. They don’t sound much like secrets and they don’t sound too tricky. If this is true, why aren’t all students reading with the highest success.

The key is refining teaching/learning practice, so that we deliver powerful practice with purpose. We know that in most classrooms, students are busy. Being busy is often not enough. What are students busy doing? And how does it create better readers?

The Novice to Ninja – The Secrets to Teaching Reading workshop walks through the secrets to creating purposefullearning opportunities that result in greater reading growth. You’ll be surprised how simple it is.

This new workshop commences in Brisbane on 29 October 2009. Teachers in other locations will have the opportunity to attend in 2010.
