Introduction to the Six Traits of Writing

Learn the features of high quality writing.

Overview

Introduction to the Six Traits +1 outlines a set of characteristics which are inherent in high quality writing of all text types. Knowing and recognising the Traits supports teachers to analyse student drafts to plan meaningful and relevant lessons. The Traits assist educators to identify the skills and content students must acquire to develop proficiency as writers. Ongoing interest from teachers, ongoing research into their effectiveness and an ever-increasing adoption rate has seen the Traits make their way into schools across the globe. Many current criteria sheets, rubrics and assessment proformas for writing are based around the Traits, many using similar formats or modifications of the original framework.

In this after-school workshop for primary teachers, the Six Traits are introduced, explored and examined in relation to teaching goals, mentor texts and lesson examples. The features of the +1, or presentation, will also be outlined.

Content addressed in this workshop includes:

  • The Traits: ideas, organisation, voice, word choice, fluency, conventions
  • The Traits and the writing process
  • Lesson ideas for teaching the Traits
  • Recognising the Traits in students' writing and planning from data
  • Rubrics for summative assessment
  • Student reflection and self-monitoring
  • How the Traits align with quality pedagogy (Modelled, Shared, Guided Writing)
