Introduction to the Six Traits of Writing

Learn the features of high quality writing.

Overview

For several decades, the ‘Six Traits of Writing’ has been used successfully in both primary and secondary contexts to teach students how to write well. By fostering deeper understandings about the writing process, students using the traits have developed a metalanguage to discuss writing, become more self-reliant writers and are better positioned to apply strategies to improve a draft. They assist educators to identify relevant skills and content to support large and small group instruction. Many writing rubrics and proficiency scales are based on the traits.
