Literacy Workshops
Reading Stamina
Suitable for teachers of Years 1 - 7
What are the benefits of reading more and often?
How can teachers increase the volume of daily text read by students?
How can teachers build students’ reading stamina to increase reading time?
How can teachers enhance commonly used reading practices to highlight problem solving behaviours?
The more students read, the better they get at reading. The teachers’ role is to support students to:
- set a purpose for independent reading
- guide students to select appropriate texts to meet reading goals
- support students to acquire a repertoire of strategies which can be used flexibly and together in order to problem solve texts
- provide specific feedback to students about reading behaviours
This workshop addresses these points within the contexts of independent reading and buddy reading within the same year level and across year levels (e.g. Year 6/Year 2 buddies).
Guided Reading/Reciprocal Teaching
Suitable for teachers of Years 1 - 7
This workshop examines the approaches of adult directed guided reading and student facilitated reciprocal teaching. The reading approach guided reading provides opportunities for each student to problem solve the text as the teacher provides strategic support. Issues addressed in this workshop include:
- text selection
- identifying the challenges within texts and providing suitable supports
- scaffolding students
- monitoring reading behaviour and providing feedback
- teaching for deeper comprehension
Comprehension: I've read it, but I just don't get it!
Suitable for teachers of Prep to Year 10 (tailored to suit particular levels, e.g. P-2, 3-6, 7-10)
- What are the barriers for some students to comprehend texts?
- What limits some from full and active participation in discussions around texts?
- How can I scaffold students to comprehend challenging texts?
- How should reading lessons look and sound?
From the earliest experiences, teaching for comprehension should occur on every text read or viewed. Not only must students learn a variety of strategies to comprehend texts, they must also learn to use these strategies flexibly and together. They must know how and why to adapt thinking in order to understand new perspectives and ideas.
This workshop outlines comprehension strategies and strategic behaviours within the context of read aloud, shared reading, guided reading and literature circles.
Code Breaking: Learning to Solve Words in Reading:
Suitable for teachers and support staff in the early years
As students develop a repertoire of behaviours to decode texts, confidence grows, fluency often results and reading is enjoyed. However, it is not enough to know the strategies for solving tricky words. Readers must know how and when to apply strategies flexibly and together, in order to successfully solve.
This workshop focuses on building:
- oral language
- phonological knowledge including phonemic awareness
- sight words
- strategies to problem solve words.
