This workshop provides background information and practical strategies to support students to:

P-3 Reading

(One day course)

Classroom teachers and teacher's aides will examine the teaching of reading in the early years. This is a focused workshop which will examine both strategies for reading and a variety of instructional approaches for teaching. Participants will examine student's reading with a view to targeting instruction for individuals, small and large groups. The reading process is explored along with effective strategies and prompts for teaching.

Morning tea and a delicious hot lunch will be provided.

4-7 Reading

(One day course)

Years 4-7 classroom teachers will examine the teaching of reading in the middle years. Strategies for reading and the approaches for teaching reading are the focus of this workshop. Topics covered include:

P-7 Reading

(One day course)

Classroom teachers and teachers’ aides will explore the teaching of reading across the primary school. Participants will examine the important roles of decoding or solving the text, as well as comprehending or understanding texts. The instructional approaches to teaching reading will be outlined, and the important role of each approach across the primary school will be highlighted. Morning tea and a delicious hot lunch will be provided.

Explicit Teaching of Reading

(90 minute after-school course)

The Explicit Teaching Workshop addresses the key roles of observation, data analysis and interpretation in order to identify strategies, skills or knowledges applied and neglected by students.

The successful or attempted application of strategies, skills and knowledge provides educators with insights into the ways students problem solve across literacy. An absence of, or incorrect application, provides insights into the ways students must learn problem solving strategies for literacy. Both are equally important in informing, guiding and monitoring future instruction and application.

Afternoon tea will be provided.

SMILE: Supporting Beginning Readers
