P-7 Writing Workshop

"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge."
Albert Einstein

As a result of attending this one day workshop, primary teachers and teachers’ aides will develop a good understanding of:

This writing workshop for primary school teachers has been designed to empower educators to facilitate and guide instruction for students, as they build knowledge and understandings of composing texts.

Hello Angela,
I attended your last workshop at SCCC Scarborough. I just wanted to let you know that in Year 1 we tried your story writing procedure with the photo's. At the time I was asking for your help getting the children to have a go and write more.

Well!!!! You know as I do we all learn as we go. But, I used photo's from a recent excursion. I actually chose nine to give the children a choice (not thinking that everyone would want to use them all). However everyone did want to use them all. The rehearsals started slowly but each day we became better. We worked in pairs, then told each other our stories, then shared with other small groups and then..... we wrote and wrote and wrote.

We kept going for days (at the children's request) and I ended up with stories - not just sentences. One child who didn't even attend the day wrote a beautiful story about our day. We have now begun reading our stories back to each other from our written versions. The children loved it! Those who had previously written one sentence, have written many. They are very proud of their writing and as it is parent/teacher interviews I have been showing parents who are very impressed with their progress.

So, thank you for this wonderful tool and we will continue to grow in our knowledge and refine our skills.

The P–7 Writing Workshop outlines a variety of skills and strategies for teaching the technical and crafting elements of authoring. The Six Traits of effective writing will be explored using student writing samples. Participants will examine writing samples with a view to identifying individual conferencing topics, and small group and whole class teaching episodes.

A key element in planning for writing instruction is to use the data found in students’ drafts. Writing samples contain diagnostic information about students’ writing and spelling skills, and are a valuable tool for gathering data to inform future instruction. A selection of writing samples will be presented for analysis and discussion. To make the most of this component, participants are encouraged to bring samples of student work for collaborative review and analysis. These samples will be examined to identify student needs in both writing and spelling.

An overview of the writing timetable, including the important role of guided writing and flexible grouping will be discussed.

This workshop will address the stages of the writing process (writing, editing and publishing), and outline strategies to build students’ confidence and willingness to take risks when writing.

Each participant at this workshop will receive extensive workshop notes, plus a copy of the very popular 76 page publication, Mind Maps, Organisers & Planners for Writing*. The workshop is fully catered and participants will be treated to a quality hot lunch.

Please note that the P-7 Writing Workshop contains content from both the P-3 and Year 4-7 Writing Workshops. Literacy Solutions offers a range of tailored writing workshops for designing literary and non-literary texts, eg. narrative, information report and persuasive texts. We are happy to run these workshops onsite either during or after-school.
